NI Amateur Snooker Championships 1995

Tribute to the late Patrick Morgan (Pat)

The wide Northern Ireland Billiards and Snooker fraternity today regret with deep sorrow to

learn of the death of their highly esteemed colleague and friend Patrick Morgan (Pat).

A gentleman of large stature both in his physical build and in his principals and integrity,

these high morals symbolised his character in every walk of life, his home, his work and for

over forty years serving the sport he loved.

"Pa" as he was affectionately known to all his billiards and snooker colleagues, became a member of the old NIB&SCC in 1960 and during those past 48 years, he held many high official

positions in the Northern Ireland Association, as Vice Chairman: Tournament Director:

Life Member and in the latter years since the association changed to the NIB&SA for all his

dedicated and excellent service he was accorded the distinction of  Vice-President.

During his long and lustrous career as a class one Billiards and class one Snooker referee,

he officiated at many Championship finals at World, European, National and International events.

For as long as anyone can remember he diligently guarded the purse strings of the Referee’s

Association in his capacity as Treasurer.

He was always fondly hailed as the grandfather of the association and his vast knowledge and

wealth of experience and his wise guidance made him the cornerstone of the referees association.

Pat was dedicated to his faith and faithful to his Church, an out and out family man he was dearly loved as a father, a father-in-law, a grandfather and a great grandfather, and will be sadly

missed by their large closely- knit family circle.

Our thoughts are now with Martin, his son and Josephine, his daughter-in- law who tended him

during his illness and all their family circle.

Reflection.

We from the world of the sports played on the Green Baize, have been blessed and privileged to have known the man we affectionately called,

"Big Pa".

THE ALL STARS SNOOKER COMPETITION 2008

The long established snooker extravaganza this year made its way back to the delightful Members Room within the Donaghadee Golf Club, County Down, their last visit was in 1995.This friendly snooker contest played annually by the Belfast and District Golf Clubs Snooker League and a Northern Ireland Billiards & Snooker Association Select Team is now in its 30th year which demonstrates the immense  popularity and esteem that has surrounded the competition over all those years.

Both teams supply a complement of eight players, each game is a challenge over two frames of snooker. The honour of selecting the opponents for each game is given to the golf clubs team captain, this year the privilege was bestowed to Mr Charlie Campbell who is also the Vice Chairman of the Golf Clubs Snooker League.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was the “evergreen” Mr William McBride, a stalwart who has for many years been the inspiration behind this annual festival of snooker. Billy as he is fondly known to all his friends is the driving force that, mostly, behind the scenes does the spade work to assure the continuation and success of the All Stars spectacular.

Over these past three decades, “from the record books” the teams have drawn five times and the Golf leagues players can only claim one outright victory to their credit, but, everyone agrees over the whole saga of contests the friendship, camaraderie and sportsmanship of the player opponents and Officials have been the outright winners.

The M.C. opened the evening by extending a warm greeting to all the spectators, players and officials, welcoming everyone on behalf of the organising committee"

He expressed his appreciation to the Captain and members of Donaghadee Golf Club for inviting the "All Stars" back once again to their club rooms and affording them the use of all the excellent facilities

The players for both teams were announced by Charlie Campbell and who the opponents were, including the four officiating referees in charge. Play then commenced on the clubs two immaculate snooker tables.

The games were all contested in a very friendly atmosphere with, at the end the usual players chat being reminiscent of their game and holding courts of inquiry of: how I missed that black, or how that ball went in-off, and so-on. The Golf Clubs league captain declared the final results and also thanked the NI Referees, Jim Stewart, William McBride, Brian Richmond and Campbell Faulkner for the smooth and proficient manner they officiated over the entire evenings snooker. He then invited everyone to the dining room were the Donaghadee Golf Club had provided a bountiful supper served up by their friendly and helpful staff.

Mr Tommy Mulholland the Secretary /Treasurer of the Golf Clubs League congratulated the Northern Ireland Select team on their plausible victory. He explained to everyone that the funds raised through this “All Stars” event every year is totally donated to a selected charity.

He also thanked all the players of both teams and the officials for giving up their evening to assist the Golf Clubs Snooker League raise money to support charity.

Mr Jim Stewart as team manager of the NI Select team thanked the officials of the league and paid tribute to the Donaghadee Golf Club for the splendid supper they had set-up and all the staff for their hospitality. He concluded by wishing continued success to the All Stars Concept.

All Ireland Club Team Championships Report

Ireland’s most popular snooker extravaganza was hosted again in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, from 22nd to 25th January 2009.

24 teams from all over Ireland converged in "Ireland’s beauty spot" competing for what has now become Irish snooker’s most sought after trophy “The All-Ireland Club Team Champions”.  This is the nineteenth year of the Championship played out between the five regions, Connaught, Leinster, Munster, the Dublin Leagues and Northern Ireland.  Northern Ireland had previously been victors on 12 occasions and the Republic regions 6.

2009 Championship has also been won by a Northern team, St Matthews from Belfast, beating Kilkenny - (Leinster) 3-2 in what turned out to be a classic show piece final.  The All-Ireland Club Snooker Committee have been fortunate to have had over the past years unsparing sponsors.  The Gleneagle Hotel have always been very generous and helpful, they provide the venues and supply 15 tables and all the equipment required. This year they have again stepped in and been fully supportive of the Championships.

I have been asked by The All-Ireland Committee, the clubs and all the participating players to extend their thanks to Mr Patrick O'Donoghue and the Gleneagle Hotel for all their continuous  generosity.

This year the Championship was played on a trial basis "new format", incorporating 4 Groups with 6 teams in each group. 2 teams to qualify from each group, to set the quarter-finals, then from here on in knock-out format.

Northern Ireland had 5 representative teams participating: Drumaness, Fountain, QE1,

St Matthews and West Club.    St Matthews qualified from the round robin stages to top position in group "A",    QE1 also finished top of group "B",    Fountain lost their 1st match in the round robins and finished runners-up in group"D". Our other 2 teams Drumaness and West Club just missed out to qualify, this was the Drumaness team's 1st time to play in the All-Ireland Championship. All our 3 qualifying teams were drawn in the top half of the draw along with a team from one of the Republic region Q Club - Wicklow who finished in runners-up position in group"C"

Qualifying out of the other 18 teams all from the republic regions: Spawell  were top of group "C",  Venetian were top of group"D",  Kilkenny were runners-up in group "A" and ALSAA were runners-up in group"B". These 4 teams were all in the bottom half of the draw.

THE  QUARTER-FINAL DRAW:   Best of 5 frames.   4 Group winners play 4 runner-ups.

The closing knock-out stages of the Championship produced some exciting snooker, in 3 of the 4 quarter-final matches the winners were all decided on the 5th frame. In the QE1 v Fountain clash with the games at 2 each and the frames 2 each, Gary Crawford had to battle hard to overcome Declan Lavery for the QE1 victory.

It was the same story in the match between St Matthews v QE1, at 2 games each and Martin O'Neill

2 -- 1 down in the 5th game to Julian Logue, Martin had to pull out all the stops to take the last 2 frames and secure the match for St Matthews.

In the Final, Gary McDonald showed his old bottle and experience in the contest with St Mathews v Kilkenny, as scores again at 2 games each and frames 2 each Gary potted a pink that could have been described as shot of the Championship to gain victory and herald St Matthews the 2009 All Ireland Club Team Champions.

The high break  prize was won by T J Dowling -- Celbridge with a score of 117.

Kieran McMahon -- St Matthews was nominated player of the Tournament.

The Hotel Proprietor Mr Patrick O'Donoghue congratulated the St Matthews Team on their great achievement, he thanked all the Clubs, the players,  spectators and all those who had helped make the Championship again a great success. He paid a special tribute to Con O'Sullivan and Dan Doonan for the professional efficient manner they organise the All Ireland event each year.

Con O'Sullivan the tournament director and also Chairman of the All Ireland Club Team Committee commenced his closing address by thanking all the players for the fine sportsmanship and camaraderie they had displayed (on and off the tables) during the tournament which is the cornerstone of the Killarney event.  He congratulated all the various winners especially St Matthews. He thanked all the Referees for giving of their time and assisting to run the tournament. He thanked all the staff of the hotel for their help.

Con asked the full audience to show their appreciation to Mr Patrick O'Donoghue for all the tremendous support and sponsorship he provides, without such help the Championship event would just not be possible. In closing he wished everyone a pleasant and safe journey home.
