Darren Dornan Lifts Northern Ireland Billiards Crown at the Northern Ireland Billiards Championship On Sunday 15th March, Darren Dornan from Drumaness won the Northern Ireland Billiards Championships 2009. It was Darren’s first final and he proved victorious. In the final, held at Gervin’s Club, Coalisland, Dornan defeated Roy Lattimer of Bangor. Lattimer had to settle for runner-up for the second time after being beaten in the final last year.
The final was held over 750 points and at the 400 point interval there was very few points between the two players. However, after the interval, Dornan compiled two masterful centuries of 104 and 106 to open a large gap and seal his maiden title. The final score was 750-587. SEMI-FINAL REPORT. New Billiards Champion to Be Crowned The final of the Northern Ireland Billiards Championship takes place this Sunday 15th March at Gervin’s Club, Coalisland. Bangor’s Roy Lattimer will face Darren Dornan of Drumaness in what promises to be a thrilling affair. In the semi-finals played on Wednesday evening 11th March Lattimer defeated Norman Whaley by 600-475. The other semi-final turned out to be a classic. Richie Comiskey, the reigning champion, was pipped at the post by a defiant Darren Dornan. A magnificently-constructed 110 break saw Dornan cut the huge lead that Comiskey had built and in the end it was Dornan the victor by a single point taking the match 600-599. The final, which is over 750 points, should live up to all expectations as both players are in superb form and if the tournament continues in the same vein it has the potential to be a classic match. Since neither player has won the prestigious event before, this Sunday, Northern Ireland will have a new billiards champion. Play commences at 5.00pm. Everyone welcome. John McIntyre. Chairman.

Paddy Donnelly from the West Belfast Club lifted his 15th NI Billiards title when he defeated old rival, Armagh's Davy Elliott in the jointly sponsored championship. The sponsors must have been impressed with the large turn out for the final. Donnelly, coming back to the three ball game after an absence of two years, made a slow start but after an hours play, aided by breaks of; 103 and 105 Paddy took control. Elliott himself also started slowly but gradually some of his former skills started to appear as he entertained the big crowd with runs of: 73, 71 and 51. In a late burst of 60 plus breaks, Paddy safely secured victory by 660 points to 442. A high standard of billiards was exhibited throughout the championship, during which (12) century breaks were recorded, the top break of: 124 going to Tony Buttimer.
This momentous 15th conquest of the Northern Ireland Billiards Championship, sets Paddy again on the path to challenge for his (7th) ALL IRELAND BILLIARDS CHAMPION TITLE as he will compete at the All Ireland North v South Champions in September this year South of the border. Paddy has now played 57 matches in the NI Championship without losing, a record that will, for anyone, be hard to live up to, I doubt that it will ever be eclipsed. The Secretary of the Billiards Association thanked both sponsors for their generosity and support and looked forward to next years event.
