Northern Ireland -- 2008 Under 14 Snooker Championship The numbers this season at under 14 level have decreased as there would appear to be an age gap and many of the would be stars have now moved up into the under 16 division. That fact however did not affect the enthusiasm of all those junior contestants who participated in this years Under 14 Northern Ireland Championship hosted by and played at the Fountain Snooker Club-Larne, on Saturday 3rd May '08. The 4 young starlets who made it through to the Semi-Finals were:
Ciehlan Doherty-(Belfast), Calvin Brammeld-(Larne), Gary Johnston-(Larne), and Declan Byrne-(Drumaness) Calvin Brammeld beat Declan Byrne by 3 frames to nil. Gary Johnston also beat Ciehlan Doherty by 3 frames to nil.
THE FINAL-- Although Gary Johnston won by 3 clear frames the scoreline could have been different as some of the frames were very close and Calvin Brammeld should have won at least one of them. This is the 4th time these young players have competed in the final this season, Gary has always emerged the winner. Gary will now represent Northern Ireland in the All Ireland Champions Finals later this year in the Republic of Ireland. Well done Gary. The plate winner was Sean McGuckin-(Randalstown) Mr Colin Gavin one of the joint Proprietors presented the trophies and the N.I. Perpetual Under 14 Cup, congratulating Gary Johnston (one of his own club members) on becoming the N.I. Under 14 Champion and wishing him success in the All Ireland Finals. COMMENT: Unless a concentrated effort is made and taken on board by the Northern Ireland Association for the start of next years Junior Events, it is possible that the Under 14 Tournaments could disappear. This will have a devastating effect on the grass-roots of our sport in later Years.
